Marine Renewables Energy Engineer (Wave and Tidal)

GL Garrad Hassan North America is looking to recruit a Marine Renewables Energy Engineer (Wave and Tidal) for the Turbine Group responsible for a range of services which include technical due diligence, concept design, hydrodynamic modeling, installation and site data analysis

The Marine Renewables team currently offers a range of services which include technical due diligence, concept design, hydrodynamic modeling, installation and site data analysis. Working as part of the team, you will be required to work autonomously on a range of these activities, and take responsibility for business development in North America.  Commercial projects have durations from a few weeks to several months although there are other projects with significant ongoing R&D activity with much longer timeframes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Business development in North America markets for marine renewable;
  • Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of marine renewable manufacturers and device developers including:
    • Review design and optimization of layouts for wave/tidal energy farms;
    • Technology reviews for investors;
    • Review detailed drawing and specifications;
    • Review quality processes;
  • Use software tools to provide loading and performance predictions for wave/tidal energy devices operating in isolation and in arrays;
  • Support device developers in the assessment of new concepts, provision of loading and performance calculations, and analysis of measured data;
  • Resource studies for policy makers and other strategic stakeholders;
  • Write detailed reports;
  • Evaluate proposals and make recommendations for technical issues that arise;
  • Lead or participate in meetings and conference calls with developers, investors, lenders, and engineers regarding technical reviews and issues:
    • Participate in relevant industry groups in order to increase knowledge of technical, standards, and regulatory issues; and
    • Represent GL GH in industry forums.

The Marine Renewables Engineer will be responsible for business development of the North American Marine Renewables market supporting multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to independently manage own priorities and workload, with the flexibility to adapt to new challenges with confidence.  With minimal direction, the position will be responsible for identifying and resolving technical issues with Clients; and for addressing concerns and issues of the Client related to the project, placing a premium on the Client’s time

The position will possess an awareness of general marine renewables design knowledge and technical issues.

The position will also require the ability to perform the engineering task of developing and evaluating concepts for the manufacturer or device developer.  Detailed knowledge of, or ability to deduce, such technical details without technical specialist assistance is not required.  However, the successful candidate must be able to grasp such details and articulate them to lay persons.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Mechanical engineering;
  • Marine Renewables system components such as gearboxes, generators, blades and hydraulics; and
  • Hydrodynamics and fluid-structure interactions.

FUNDAMENTAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluent in Microsoft Office products;
  • Fluent in programming languages (MATLAB, Simulink);
  • Proficient writing and communication skills, including ability to communicate engineering issues to non technical Clients;

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical engineering or other related fields, Master or PhD preferred; and
  • Previous experience in marine renewals is desirable.

This position can be based in any one of GL Garrad Hassan US offices (Austin, TX; Peterborough, NH; Portland, OR; or San Diego, CA), with the willingness and availability to travel up to 25% of time for periods of a week or more at a time with the ability to travel internationally.  GL Garrad Hassan North America offers an excellent benefit package.
