OREC Speaks at OST Partnership Conference on Wave Energy in Oregon

On June 13, 2006, OREC founders Sean O’Neill and Carolyn Elefant each delivered a presentation to an audience of 150 at the invitation only, Oregon Science and Technology Partnership (OSTP) Conference on Wave Energy in Oregon.  O’Neill briefed the crowd on the state of ocean energy in the United States and OREC’s accomplishments of the past year, while Elefant focused on the interplay between federal regulation and Oregon state iniatives to develop wave energy resources.  OSPT just posted the presentations, which are available for download here.

  1. Our company, Inframat Corp., is a nanotechnology company that has developed a variety of unique nanocomposite surface coatings to accomplish specific objectives. One of our coatings that was developed for the US Navy has demonstrated anti-fouling capabilities that are far superior to conventional anti-fouling marine coatings. Wetted surfaces of naval vessels that were coated with this material approximately five years ago still show virtually no signs of biofouling. In addition, this nanocomposite material has superior bond strength, toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and ductility compared to conventional coatings. Also, the material is very environmentally friendly, as it does not contain copper, lead or other heavy metals that are hazardous to the marine environment. At present, this material is provided for thermal spray application. However we are in the process of developing and testing a paint version of the material.

Since biofouling represents a substantial maintenance expense for hydro-kinetic systems, I believe that our anti-fouling nanocomposite material could potentially provide an important value-added solution for these systems.
